Another result of this whole Insult-Leverett-In-Foreign-Language situation, besides the even-more-widespread antipathy towards Leverett, seems to be that it is becoming fashionable to use foreign insults to fellow students as well. Sometimes people really take these insults to heart. For example, I accidentally bumped into a Ravenclaw whose name I don't know, so that he dropped his books and spilled ink all over them, and he called me a
salaude. At least, I think that's what he said. I don't speak French, and his accent was horrible, so it was hard to tell.
Because it fit so perfectly, I quoted the book in which I first found the term
salaude, saying in my best fake French accent, "Pardon? Your accent is not at all good, Monsieur. If you wish for me to understand you should speak the English."
He blinked and muttered a bit and then walked away. I don't think he even knew what it means. I'm not entirely sure how horrible an insult it would be in French, and its English translation--"bastard"--isn't so bad, but I get the feeling he thought it was a lot worse.
